Marches follow Hong Kong riots

HONG KONG — Thousands of anti-World Trade Organisation (WTO) protesters marched through the streets yesterday as Hong Kong tried to recover from a night of rioting that marked one of the city’s worst outbreaks of violence in decades.

The peaceful demonstrators chanted “sink WTO” as trade ministers wrapped up six days of trade talks.

The protesters oppose efforts to open up vulnerable markets to foreign competition. Police said 5000 people took part. Security forces said the 900 demonstrators arrested would be charged. Sapa-AP
